20 years of Polish railways in the statistics of the Office of Rail Transport
The Office of Rail Transport, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has prepared statistics summarising rail sector in Poland over the past two decades. The data include, i. a., how popular passenger, freight and intermodal transport services were at that time, as well as how many wagons of a given type were owned by carriers. The study also covers other operational and infrastructure data.

Reduced fares for students studying abroad
The International Student Identity Card ISIC entitles a student to concessionary travel on Polish railways. However, under certain conditions. ISIC is not a substitute for the Polish student card and does not entitle any student to concessionary travel. Foreign students who are not Polish citizens or who do not live in Poland will also not benefit from the discount.

UTK and ERA together at TRAKO
During the 15th TRAKO International Railway Fair experts from the Office of Rail Transport and the European Union Agency for Railways received visitors at a joint stand. More than 50 meetings were organised. It was also an opportunity for a discussion between Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport and Josef Doppelbauer, Executive Director of ERA.

During the 15th International Railway Fair TRAKO in Gdańsk, the Office of Rail Transport organised a debate on the state of rail transport safety in Poland. During the debate participants discussed safety issues during railway construction works.

Rail freight by commodity groups in 2Q 2023
In 2Q 2023 54.8 m tonnes of freight were carried. The transport performance was 14.8 bn tonne-km. These results are down by 5.8 m tonnes and 1.3 bn tonne-km respectively compared to 1Q 2023. It is mainly due to a significant decrease in hard coal freight from 22.5 m tonnes in 1Q 2023 to 17.1 m in 2Q 2023 (by 23.9%).

Intermodal transport in 2Q 2023
In 2Q 2023 nearly 5.8 m tonnes were carried in intermodal transport. The transport performance reached more than 2 bn tonne-km. Compared to the same period last year, there were decreases in both the total weight carried and the transport performance.

Agreement with the Czech rail safety authority signed
The President of the Office of Rail Transport has signed an agreement with the Director of the Czech rail safety authority, Drážní úřad. The document sets out the principles of cooperation and coordination in the field of supervision of railway undertakings and infrastructure managers carrying out cross-border activities on railway lines connecting Poland and the Czech Republic.

Post-holiday timetable adjustment
A planned post-holiday adjustment to the annual train timetable comes into force on Sunday 3 September 2023. Trains according to this timetable will run until 11 November this year.

Rail safety in 2022
The Polish railways are safe, but this level of safety must be taken care of all the time and efforts must be made to eliminate potential risks and possible threats – wrote Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport in the introduction to the “Report on the state of railway safety. 2022”. The report shows that the accident rate is maintaining a decreasing trend, which means that the safety of the railway system is increasing. Still, more than 70% of accidents on the railway network are incidents caused by car drivers and pedestrians.
