Intermodal transport in 2Q 2023

14.09.2023

In 2Q 2023 nearly 5.8 m tonnes were carried in intermodal transport. The transport performance reached more than 2 bn tonne-km. Compared to the same period last year, there were decreases in both the total weight carried and the transport performance.

The total weight in intermodal transport fell from 6.7 m tonnes in 2Q 2022 to 5.8 m tonnes in 2Q 2023 (13.5%). At the same time, the transport performance decreased from 2.3 bn tonne-km in 2Q 2022 to 2 bn tonne-km in 2Q 2023 (11.8%).

From April to June 2023 rail carriers transported nearly 371,000 intermodal units, which accounted for nearly 564,000 TEUs. Compared to the same period last year, the number of units transported was 17.3% lower (in TEU it was a decrease by 22.4%).

In the first half of 2023, the share of intermodal transport in the rail market reached 10% (by weight) and 12.6% (by the transport performance).

With the war in Ukraine still going on, we are watching how the current situation impacts intermodal transport results. Unfortunately, the basic parameters of intermodal transport dropped by almost 20% in 2Q 2023 compared to 2Q 2022. The reduction in container transport between Europe and China by route via Belarus is responsible for the decrease in traffic and the consequent reduction in transshipments at terminals in the East. – notes Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.

Comparing the results of 2Q 2023 with 1Q 2023, there are decreases in most parameters. The largest drops occurred in the number of TEUs carried and the number of intermodal units carried - by 9.8% and 6.8% respectively. The total weight decreased slightly by 0.3%. Only in the transport performance was an increase by 7.6%.

In 2Q 2023 rail intermodal transport services were performed by 24 licensed carriers.
