30.11.2020

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic the level of intermodal transfers has been steadily rising. In the first three quarters of 2020 the mass of intermodal transfers rose by more than 18% and the number of units by almost 17%. Since the beginning of this year the volume of intermodally transported goods has almost reached the level of the entire 2018. The market share of intermodal transfers has risen in 3Q to 10.5% as regards the mass.

In comparison to the corresponding period of last year in 3Q 2020 all parameters of intermodal transport rose. From July till September the carriers transported 438 thousand units what amounted to 724 thousand TEU. Their number rose by 25.1% (by 33.9% in TEU).

Combined mass in intermodal transfers in 3Q 2020 amounted to almost 6.1 m tonnes, and transfer service - to almost 2 bn tonne-km. This means increases by 20% and 7.6% respectively, when comparing to 3Q 2019. The market share of intermodal transfers with regard to railway market reached the level of 10.5% (mass) and 14.5% (service). Just 5 years ago this share was at the level of 4.6% (mass) and 7.4% (service).

- The intermodal market has been rising systematically in the recent years. We should note that the mass of transported goods in the three quarters of 2020 has reached the level of 17 million tonnes and this value is close to the amount of goods transported this way in 2018 - comments Ignacy Góra, the President of the Office of Rail Transport. - Rail transport is a reliable and proven mode of transport also during crises like ones caused by the pandemic. We  see this upward trend in the number of trains operating on the New Silk Road. Their number after three quarters of this year, even taking into account the pandemic, rose by 38% in comparison to the corresponding period of 2019 - adds Ignacy Góra.

In the period 1Q-3Q 2020 the mass of transported goods in intermodal transport reached the level of almost 17 m tonnes, and transfer service - almost 5.5 bn tonne-km which means an increase by 18% and 5.7% respectively in comparison to the corresponding period of 2019.

In 3Q 2020 railway intermodal transfers were offered by 21 licensed carriers.
