28.03.2024

This year in February almost 31,7 mln people used railway services. It’s nearly 4,4 mln more than in February last year. In freight transport 17,6 mln tones of goods were transported – 1,5 mln tones less in comparison to previous year.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In February almost 31.7 mln passengers travelled by railway. It’s 4,4 mln people more (+16,1%) than in the same month of the previous year. Passenger trains have carried out more than 2 billion passenger-kilometres, which means that it increased almost 0,3 billion passenger-kilometers (+14,3%) from February 2023. Operational work amounted to 16.2 million train-kilometres. The increase compared to February 2023 was 1.4 million train-kilometres (+9.6%). The average travel distance in February 2024 was 63.9 km. That's less than a kilometer comparing to 2023.

That was the best February in passenger transport from 2012. The railway noted record results in the number of passengers transported, the volume of transport and operating work.

February 2024 was also slightly better in terms of passenger amounts, transport work and average distance compared to January this year. Rail services were used by 0. 3 million more passengers (+1%), the value of transport work was higher by more than 48 million passenger-kilometres (+2. 4%) and the average distance travelled by a passenger increased by almost 1 km. The decrease can be only seen in the case of operational work performed by passenger trains – in February it was lower by almost 1 million train-kilometres (-5. 7%) compared to the January result.

This year, passenger rail served almost 63. 1 million passengers and the value of transport work exceeded 4 billion passenger-kilometres. Operating work reached 33. 3 million train-kilometres.

Compared to the first two months of 2023, the number of passengers increased by almost 6. 2 million (+10. 9%). The value of transport work also increased by 0. 4 billion passenger-kilometres (+9. 9%), as well as operating work by 2. 4 million train-kilometres (+7. 8%).

In February 2024, almost 17. 6 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail. This is 1. 5 million tonnes (-7. 7%) less than last year. Transport work done in February by freight trains amounted to 4. 6 billion tonne-kilometres. This represents a decrease of almost 0. 5 billion tonne-kilometres (-9. 5%) compared to February 2023. Operating work, which amounted to just under 6. 6 million train-kilometres, is 0. 4 million train-kilometres less (-5. 2%). The average transport distance of 1 ton of cargo in February was 264 km – 5 km less than in the same month in 2023.

This year, February was slightly weaker than January only in terms of the weight of goods. Freight trains carried 0. 1 million tonnes less (-0. 7%). For transport and operating work, these figures were higher, respectively by 170 million tonne-kilometres (+3. 8%) and 0. 2 million train-kilometres (+3. 3%) compared to January 2024. The average distance of one tonne of freight increased by 11. 6 km.

Within two months of 2024, rail transported almost 35. 3 million tonnes of goods, freight trains carried performed transport work of more than 9.1 billion tonne-kilometres, and operational work is 12.9 million train-kilometres. In comparison with January and February 2023, the weight of transported cargo decreased by almost 4. 2 million tonnes (-10. 6%) , the transport work performed by 1. 4 billion tonne-kilometres (-13. 6%) , and the number of train-kilometres by 1. 3 million (-9. 3%) in the reported operating work.
