30.11.2022

Almost 32.8 m passengers travelled by train in in October 2022, which is the highest result in the last decade. In rail freight the weight carried was 21.2 m tonnes, which is down 3.7% year-on-year. In contrast, transport and operational performance increased.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

Almost 32.8 m passengers travelled by train in October 2022. It is an increase by 5.8 m passengers (+21.5%) year-on-year. This value is higher than in October 2019, the last year before the pandemic, by 1.6 m passengers (+5.1%). It is also the highest value recorded in our monthly statistics since 2012. In October 2022 the transport performance reached 2.1 bn pass-km, which is 0.5 bn higher (+28.4%) than in October 2021. The operational performance amounted to 15.4 m train-km, which is an increase by 0.4 m (+2.6%) compared to October 2021. The average distance travelled by a passenger in October was 63 km, which is 3.4 km longer (+5.7%) than in the previous year.

In October the academic year starts, which makes rail an excellent alternative for students to get to universities. In October 3.2 m more passengers (+10.7%) travelled by train than in September. Higher results than in September were achieved by the long-distance carrier PKP Intercity, as well as by regional and agglomeration operators. The transport performance in October was higher by almost 0.1 bn passenger-km (+4%) than in September. The operational performance incereased to almost 0.2 m train-km (+1%). The average distance travelled by a passenger in October was 4 km shorter (-6.1%) than in September.

281.8 m people travelled by train since the beginning of the year. The transport performance reached 19.9 bn pass-km and the operational performance 155.2 m train-km. If we compare these values with the same period in 2021, we get an increase of 42.8% in passenger numbers, 53% in transport performance and 5% in operational performance.

When we compare January-October 2022 to the corresponding period in 2019, the values are higher by 3.1 m in the number of passengers, 1.3 bn pass-km in the transport performance and 13.1 m train-km in the operational performance.

RAIL FREIGHT

In October 2022 the weight of goods carried by rail reached 21.2 m tonnes, for the first time since May exceeding 21 m tonnes. Compared to October 2021 - the month with the best performance in terms of freight weight in 2021 - there was a decrease by 0.8 m tonnes (-3.7%). The transport performance was 5.5 bn tonne-km. The result in October 2022 was over 0.3 bn tonne-km (5.9%) higher than in October 2021. The operational performance increased by 0.2 m train-km (+2.2%) to 7.6 m train-km. The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 258 km - 23 km longer than last year.

All transport parameters rose compared to September 2022. The total weight of goods was higher by 0.7 m tonnes (3.6%). The transport performance rose by 0.2 bn tonne-km (3.6%), while the operational performance by 0.3 m train-km (4.5%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was at the same level as in September.

In ten months of 2022 208.6 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail, the transport performance reached 52 bn tonne-km and the operational performance was 72.3 m train-km. When compared to the same period last year, it rose by 3.4%, 12.4% and 6.2% respectively.
