Rail transport in July 2022

01.09.2022

In July 30.5 m passengers travelled by rail, i.e. 29.4% more than a year ago. This was the best July transport result since the Office of Rail Transport started to collect data. In rail freight 20.9 m tonnes of goods were transported, which is an increase by 1% compared to July 2021.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In July 2022 30.5 m passengers used rail transport services. When compared to 2021, it is an increase by 6.9 m passengers (+29.4%). This result is also 2.4 m passengers (+8.4%) higher than in July 2019, the last year before the pandemic broke out. It is also the best July in terms of passenger numbers since the Office of Rail Transport started to keep rail statistics. Other passenger transport parameters also rose. The transport performance amounted to 2.6 bn pass-km – an increase by 0.7 bn (+36.7%) compared to July 2021. The operational performance reached 16.3 m train-km - 0.5 m (+3.1%) more than last year. The average distance travelled by a passenger in July 2022 was 85.5 km, which is 4.5 km longer (+5.6%) than in July 2021.

In a month-on-month comparison, in July rail carriers handled 0.7 m more passengers (+2.3%) than in June, the transport performance was 0.4 bn pass-km higher (+18.6%) and the operational performance was 0.9 m train-km higher (+6.1%). The average distance travelled by a passenger rose by more than 12 km (+15.9%) compared to June, in line with the seasonal trend as during the holidays the average journey length increases.

From January to July this year 188.6 m passengers travelled by train. The transport performance was 13.2 bn pass-km and the operational performance amounted to 108.1 m train-km. When compared to the same period in 2021, there was an increase in these parameters by 56.4% in passenger numbers, 70.2% in transport performance and 5.8% in operational performance respectively.

RAIL FREIGHT

In July 2022 20.9 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail, a slight increase by 0.2 m tonnes (+1%) compared to last year. The transport performance reached 5.4 bn tonne-km, 0.7 bn higher (+13.8%) than in July 2021. The operational performance was 7.4 m train-km, 0.4 m more (+5.7%) than a year earlier. In July the average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 256 km, which is 29 km longer (+12.7%) than in July 2021.

The volumes of freight performance and the average distance recorded in July 2022 are the highest values for these parameters achieved in that month over the last 10 years. In contrast, for the total weight of transported goods and operational performance higher levels were only recorded in July 2018.

When we compare data month-on-month, the weight of transported goods rose by 0.6 m tonnes (+2.9%), the transport performance by 0.04 bn tonne-km (+0.7%) and the operational performance by 0.1 m train-km (+1%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods dropped compared to June from 261 km to 256 km (-2.1%).

Since the beginning of this year, 146.1 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail, the transport performance reached 35.9 bn tonne-km and the operational performance amounted to more than 50 m train-km. Compared to January-July 2021 period, these parameters increased by 6.2% in the weight of transported goods, by 14.6% in the transport performance and by 7.6% in the operational performance respectively.
