Rail transport in May 2022

01.07.2022

In May 2022 30.4 m passengers travelled by rail. This is a record-breaking result, as over the last 10 years the monthly number of rail passengers exceeded 30 m only once - in October 2019. The transport performance exceeded 2 bn pass-km. In rail freight the weight of goods transported amounted to 21.1 m tonnes. For the third consecutive month rail freight results were above 21 m tonnes.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

In May 2022 30.4 m passengers used rail services. When compared to May 2021, it is an increase by 11.5 m passengers (60.8%). In the last 10 years a higher number of passengers was only in October 2019 (31.2 m). Significant improvements were also recorded in other passenger transport parameters. The transport performance reached 2.1 bn pass-km and was almost 1 bn pass-km (85%) higher than in May 2021. It is the highest value of the transport performance since August 2019, when it reached 2.3 bn pass-km. The operational performance in May was 15.5 m train-km, which is an increase by 0.9 m train-km (6.1%) year-on-year. The average distance travelled by a passenger in May 2022 is 68.9 km, which is 9 km longer (15.1%) than in May 2021.
More than double the year-on-year increase in the number of passengers (117.6%) was recorded by PKP Intercity, whose services were used by almost 5.3 m passengers (2.8 m more passengers than in 2021). POLREGIO recorded a rise from 5.0 to 7.7 m passengers (54.9%), while Koleje Mazowieckie transported 1.4 m passengers more (from 3.8 m to 5.2 m passengers). In May 2022 most regional rail operators had increases of more than 50% in passenger volumes compared to May 2021.
When compared to April 2022, rail operators transported 3.5 m more passengers (13.1%), the transport performance was 0.3 bn pass-km higher (15.2%) and the operational performance rose by 0.6 m train-km (3.7%) month-on-month. The average distance travelled by a passenger in May was 1.3 km longer (1.9%) than in April this year.
Passenger transport results in May 2022 were higher compared to pre-pandemic May 2019 - almost 2 m passengers more were carried (6.9%), the transport performance was 0.3 bn higher (13.4%) and the operational performance increased by 1.4 m train-km (9.8%). The average distance travelled by a passenger in May 2022 was 3.9 km longer (6.1%) than in May 2019.
Since the beginning of this year aggregated rail passenger transport results are: 128.4 m passengers, 8.4 bn pass-km and 76.5 m train-km.

RAIL FREIGHT

In May 2022 21.1 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail. It is an increase by 0.7 m tonnes (3.4%) compared to May 2021. The transport performance reached 5.4 bn tonne-km and rose by 14.5% year-on-year. The operational performance increased from 6.9 m train-km in May 2021 to 7.4 m train-km in May 2022 (7.1%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods in May was the longest average haul distance per tonne of freight and it was 254 km, which is 25 km more than in May 2021.
When compared to April 2022, it is a decrease in the weight of transported goods by 0.2 m tonnes (0.7%). However, other parameters are higher than in April. The transport performance increased by 0.1 bn tonne-km (2.4%) and the operational performance by 0.2 m train-km (3.3%). The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 8 km longer (from 246 km to 254 km).
The month-on-month decrease in the weight of goods carried affected around half of the rail freight companies in May 2022. In individual cases these were not large drops, but for the total freight results these decreases affected less than 1% of freight traffic compared to April.
After five months of 2022 aggregated rail freight results are: 104.6 m tonnes, 25.2 bn tonne-km and 35.3 m train-km.
