Rail transport in April 2022

In April 2022 over 26.9 m passengers travelled by train. 21.3 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail. It is an increase by 92.6% in the number of passengers and 6.9% in the weight of goods carried, when compared to April 2021.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT

More than 26.9 m passengers used rail services in April, which means that 12.9 m passengers returned to rail compared to April 2021 (+92.6% year-on-year). The transport performance reached 1.8 bn pass-km and was almost 1 bn pass-km higher (117.2%) than a year ago. A smaller increase was recorded in the operational performance, which amounted to 14.9 m train-km - by 0.8 m train-km more (5.4%). In April the average distance travelled by a passenger was 67.6 km, which was 7.7 km longer (12.8%) than in 2021.
For some rail passenger operators April ended with more than a doubled volumes of passengers compared to 2021. For PKP Intercity it was 162% passengers more, for Koleje Wielkopolskie - 123.3%, Koleje Małopolskie - 106.2%, Koleje Śląskie - 104.6% and Koleje Dolnośląskie - 104.3%.
April 2022 - when compared to the record-breaking March 2022 in the number of passengers carried - turned out to be slightly worse. Overall, rail operators reported 1.5 m fewer passengers (-5.4%), the transport performance was 51.1 m pass-km (-2.7%) lower and the operational performance was 1.2 m train-km (-7.4%) lower than a month earlier. However, average distance travelled by a passenger was 1.8 km longer (2.8%) when compared to March this year.
In total, since the beginning of 2022, almost 98 m passengers used rail services, the transport performance was 6.3 bn pass-km and the operational performance was 61 m train-km.

RAIL FREIGHT

In April 21.3 m tonnes of goods were transported by rail. Compared to last year's results, it is an increase of 1.4 m tonnes (6.9%). The transport performance reached 5.2 bn tonne-km, which is 0.7 bn tonne-km (15.1%) more than last year. The operational performance grew by 0.5 m train-km (7.3%), reaching 7.2 m train-km. The average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 246 km, which is 18 km longer.
Most rail operators reported a decrease in freight volumes in April compared to March this year. The weight of goods carried was lower by 1.5 m tonnes (-6.7%), the transport performance was lower by 0.2 bn tonne-km (-4.4%), while operational performance was lower by 0.5 m train-km (-6%). However, the average transport distance of one tonne of goods was 6 km longer.
After four months of 2022, the weight of goods transported amounted to 83.5 m tonnes. The transport performance reached 19.8 bn tonne-km and the operational performance 27.9 m train-km. The average transport distance of one tonne of goods for four months was 237 km.
