A record year for intermodal railway transport

30.03.2020

Freight railway carriers transported 19.5 million tonnes of intermodal goods in 2019. Transfer service amounted to 7.1 billion tonne-kilometres. In comparison to 2018 the weight of transported goods rose by almost 15%, and operational service - by 14.5%.

Data collected by the Office of Rail Transport (Pol. Urząd Transportu Kolejowego, UTK) shows that the weight of goods in intermodal transport in 2019 rose by 2.5 million tonnes in comparison to 2018. Transfer service on the other hand rose by about 0.9 billion tonne-kilometres.

- Statistics show a possibility of further growth of intermodal transfers. Its share in the market amounted to 8.3% (mass) and 12.6% (transfer service). It clearly shows that the level of commercial exchange between East and West is rising - sums up Mr. Ignacy Góra, Ph.D., President of UTK. - We must also take into consideration the need to develop connections between the North and the South. That's why it is necessary to introduce systemic solutions improving both the infrastructure parameters and the speed of commercial trains, as well as adjusting border crossings to serve trains of heightened parameters - adds Mr. Góra.

In 2019 the railway carriers transported a record number of freight units - 2,137 million TEU (one 20-foot container = 1 TEU). As in previous years 20- and 40-foot containers were dominant in this kind of transport. Their share in 2019 amounted to 45.8% and 43.1% respectively.

UTK has prepared an analysis regarding the railway intermodal transport in 2019 (Polish version only). Detailed data on intermodal transfer service in 2019 can be found on the UTK website under this link.
