Freight transport in the first half of 2019

In June railway undertakings transported less than 19 million tonnes of goods, which is less by nearly 1.9 million tonnes than in the corresponding month of the previous year. The first half of 2019 ended with the amount of nearly 119 million tons of transported goods.

Comparing year to year in June of 2019 the weight of transported goods decreased by 9%. The performed transport operations amounted to less than 4.5 billion tonne-kilometres and was lower by over 0.4 billion tonne-kilometres (9%), while the operational performance was at the level of 6.6 million train-kilometres, 0.7 million train-kilometres (9.6%) less than in June 2018. 
“One may notice with regard to the freight market that there is a noticeable decrease in the weight of transported goods. Available data for the first quarter of the year for intermodal transport and group transport shows that not all types of transport recorded such a decrease and it concerns mainly groups of bulk freight” states Ignacy Góra, President of the Urząd Transportu Kolejowego.
In the first half of the year the weight of goods transported by rail was lower by 119 million tonnes (4%) than in the same period of 2018. The transport operations remained at the level of 28.2 billion tonne-kilometres and the operational performance – 1.3 million train-kilometres. This means respectively 0.9 million tonne-kilometres (4%) and 1.7 million train-kilometres (4%) less than in the previous year.
